Job Opportunity at the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology: Atom-Probe Tomography (APT) Instrument Specialist (Operations, Education, Research)
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering is establishing a new materials characterization center. We are seeking a highly qualified individual to lead the operation, maintenance, service, and research associated with a newly acquired LEAP 6000 XR Atom-Probe Tomograph (APT). The ideal candidate will hold a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering, Solid State Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field. This position requires proven expertise in materials characterization applying either APT or other techniques such as electron microscopy along with technical skills and strong interpersonal and teaching skills.
Key Responsibilities:
APT Instrument Operation & Maintenance:
Manage the daily operation of the APT facility.
Oversee regular system maintenance, including vacuum, laser, cryogenic, micromechanics, high-voltage components, and fast-electronics systems; troubleshoot issues, and collaborate with service engineers as needed.
Manage users registration, usage, and accounting.
Attend manufacturer-provided operational courses and users' group meetings to stay updated on best practices.
Research:
Conduct high-level research in materials characterization and collaborate on research projects with academic researchers and industry partners.
Perform data acquisition and apply data mining using high-throughput software.
Teaching & User Support:
Instruct students and users in practical APT through minicourses and hands-on training.
Provide service to academic and industrial users, offering support in data collection and analyses.
Community & Scientific Engagement:
Participate actively in scientific conferences, workshops, and seminars.
Stay engaged with the broader scientific community by publishing research and contributing to academic and industrial collaborations.
Requirements: Required Qualifications:
Ph.D. in Materials Science & Engineering, Solid State Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
Expertise in at least one of the following is required: Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Analytical Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Dual-Beam Focused Ion Beam (FIB) Microscopy, Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS), Auger Spectroscopy, or other related spectroscopy techniques.
Proven experience with vacuum technologies, laser systems, cryogenics, and high-voltage components or several of them.
Proven experience with data analysis software packages.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills with experience in teaching and working with users from different scientific backgrounds.
Ability to employ high-throughput data analysis techniques and machine learning algorithms is a plus.
